Hytale Boss Abilities as Player Runes: Simon Collins-Laflamme Confirms the Team Prototyped Them, and That the Rune Ability System Will Be Expanded Quite Heavily
Von HytaleCharts TeamKategorie: news:minuten min gelesen
Two replies on 16 September 2026 turned a quiet suggestions thread into the most interesting Hytale combat story of the week. Simon Collins-Laflamme, co-founder of Hytale, first said his in-dev experiments are really fun and that the game is going to be something special, then followed up with the specific: the team did try boss abilities as player runes, for fun, and it went well enough to mention publicly. He immediately added that they need to start with the basics first, which is the honest ceiling on the whole story. The basics are the Rune Ability system that arrived in the Update 7 pre-release: collect runes, place them in a Runebinder's Effigy, augment your combat abilities, with an initial five covering rage, fire, poison, earth and wind. This article separates what is confirmed and shipped from what is confirmed only as a prototype, walks through each of the five live runes and what a boss version of that idea would have to solve, covers the ability control and audio changes that landed alongside them, records exactly what the published Update 7 notes do and do not say about bosses, and sets out the realistic reading of when an expanded rune system might actually arrive. No date has been given, and we are not inventing one.
Hytale co-founder Simon Collins-Laflamme has confirmed that the team prototyped boss abilities as player runes. In the same reply, he confirmed that they are not what happens next. Both halves matter, and the second one is the one that should shape your expectations.
On 16 September 2026 at 18:16:53 UTC, Simon replied to his own thread with two short lines:
ah yes, we did try boss abilities as runes for fun and omg
however, need to start with the basics first
That is the entire confirmation. It is a development experiment that happened, not a feature that was announced. There is no date, no update number attached to it, and nothing about boss abilities as runes appears in any published Hytale patch note. What makes the line worth reading closely is a co-founder describing something the team built internally and clearly enjoyed, immediately followed by an explicit reason it is being held back.
What Simon Collins-Laflamme Said About Hytale Boss Abilities as Runes
The boss runes line was the second of two replies posted within three minutes of each other. The first, at 18:14:24 UTC, was broader and was itself a reply to his own 6 September post:
Our in-dev experiments are really fun, this was the right call, this game is going to be something special
Read on its own, that is developer enthusiasm and nothing more. Read as the setup to the reply that followed it, it tells you the experiments being referred to are rune experiments, and that at least one of them involved handing boss abilities to players.
The phrase "for fun" is doing real work there. It signals an internal test rather than a scheduled feature, which is how most good combat ideas start and also why none of them are guaranteed to ship. The follow up line, "however, need to start with the basics first", is the order of operations said out loud: build the foundation, then see what it can carry.
The 6 September Post Asking for Hytale Rune Ability Suggestions
The thread began ten days earlier. On 6 September 2026 at 18:17:38 UTC, Simon posted an open request with two images attached:
Do you have suggestions for the upcoming Hytale ability system involving runes? Abilities or Modifiers
Summons, cast-on triggers, spells, PvP, totems, buffs, support ideas?
Currently available in a very basic form in the pre-release, but will be expanded quite heavily!
Three things are worth pulling out of that.
The split between abilities and modifiers is the design frame. Simon asked about both by name. That distinction is not new to Hytale and has been part of how runes were described since Chapter 1 was first shown, which our explainer on ability runes and modifier runes covers in detail.
The categories he listed are a wishlist prompt, not a roadmap. Summons, cast-on triggers, spells, PvP, totems, buffs and support are the shapes he invited suggestions about. None of them are commitments.
"will be expanded quite heavily" is the strongest published statement about the system's future. It came directly from a co-founder, in public, about a system that is already playable. That is a far firmer footing than the boss runes line, which is only ever described as something tried.
The call for suggestions is still open at the time of writing, which is the practical reason to care about the thread at all. If you have wanted a say in how a Hytale combat system develops, that thread is where the team asked.
What the Hytale Rune Ability System Already Does in the Update 7 Pre-Release
The basics Simon refers to are not theoretical. They shipped on 3 September 2026 in the first part of the Update 7 pre-release, which we covered when it landed in our Update 7 Part 1 pre-release breakdown. The patch notes introduce it under Movement and Combat:
Introducing the Rune Ability system! Collect Runes and then place them within a Runebinder's Effigy to augment your combat abilities.
Five runes came with it. These are the published descriptions, in the order the notes list them:
Rune: Enrage, "used to channel primal rage to increase damage both dealt and received"
Rune: Fireball, "used to launch a fireball that explodes on impact"
Rune: Imbue Poison, "used to imbue your weapon with poison, causing its attacks to apply a stacking poison debuff"
Rune: Ground Slam, "used to sunder the earth, causing an earthen spike to erupt forth that launches foes upward"
Rune: Wind Strike, "used to imbue your weapon with the elemental wind, causing the next three attacks to launch piercing arcs of wind"
Look at the spread. Enrage is a self buff with a cost attached. Fireball is a ranged nuke. Imbue Poison and Wind Strike are both weapon imbues. Ground Slam is area control with a launch effect. Five runes, four distinct roles.
Part 2 of the pre-release on 10 September then did the kind of quiet polish that tells you a system is being invested in rather than parked. Both of these are verbatim from the notes and both are covered in our Update 7 Part 2 write up:
"Performed a visual pass on the Runebinder's Effigy 'Ability Workbench' UI."
"Runes will now display their ability tags within the tooltips."
Ability tags in tooltips is the more interesting of the two. Tags imply categorisation, and categorisation is what lets a system reason about combinations: which runes stack, which conflict, which a modifier is allowed to touch. It is the sort of plumbing you add when you expect the list of runes to get considerably longer than five.
Which Hytale Boss Abilities Could Work as Player Runes
This section is speculation and is labelled as such. Nothing below is confirmed. It is worth thinking through anyway, because the design problem is the reason Simon put the idea aside rather than shipped it.
Boss abilities and player abilities are built to different specifications. A boss ability is tuned for one enemy fighting several players in a controlled arena, with a long telegraph, a big area and numbers that assume you will only face it a handful of times. A player rune is tuned for repeated use by one person, with a cooldown budget that has to sit alongside four other things you can press. Moving an ability from the first column to the second is a rebalance, a retelegraph and usually a new animation, not a copy and paste job.
The community reaction in the thread pointed straight at that tension. On 16 September at 18:24:35 UTC, @TorbisXD suggested a route around it:
Could be a fun drop from bosses, maybe not as strong but similar
That is a sensible answer to the balance problem: keep the flavour, drop the numbers, and use the rune as a trophy that carries a memory of the fight rather than the fight's raw power. It also solves acquisition, because runes have to come from somewhere and a boss is a natural source.
Fourteen seconds later, @flash_canadian asked the question everyone was going to ask:
Gobliberator with runes??
That is how the reply was typed. The boss is named the Gobliterator, and it is worth being clear that it has its own separate status question: it is not in the pre-release, which we covered in our piece on the Gobliterator and hard mode. Simon did not name any boss in his reply, did not confirm any specific ability, and did not respond to either suggestion. Nobody has said which boss, or bosses, the internal experiment used.
What Has Not Been Confirmed About Hytale Boss Runes
We read the live Update 7 pre-release patch notes page in full before writing this, and the negative findings are as useful as the positive ones. The page is a living document with the byline "Posted by Hytale Team September 3, 2026".
There is no Update 7 Part 3. The page's only part headings are "Pre-Release (Update 7 Part 2)" and "Pre-Release (Update 7 Part 1)".
The word "Gobliterator" appears zero times on the page.
Bosses are mentioned twice, and both mentions are for modders. Both point at the Example_Boss encounter used as a worked example for weather actions, where the encounter forces a Blood Moon on the transition into Phase 1 and clears it when the boss dies.
So boss abilities as player runes appear nowhere in the published notes. There is no date, no update number, no confirmation that the prototype survived past the experiment, and no statement that it will ever ship. The correct summary is short: prototyped, enjoyed, deferred.
How Hytale Ability Controls and Audio Changed Alongside the Runes
The rune system did not arrive alone. The Update 7 pre-release also reworked how abilities are triggered, which matters more than it sounds if the number of runes is going to grow.
On controller, the notes state that the team "Reworked ability controls on a controller so that you hold the right bumper and then press a different button for different abilities." The player-facing version spells out the mapping: "Ability Keys 1, 2, and 3, have been moved to a modifier system, now usable with RB + Face Button to trigger an ability, for example: Ability 1 - RB + Y - Signature Move", followed by "Ability 2 - RB + X - Skill 1", "Ability 3 - RB + B - Skill 2" and "Ability 4 - RB + A - Ability 4".
A held modifier plus four face buttons is a layout that scales. One ability per button does not. If you are planning a system that "will be expanded quite heavily", reworking the input scheme to free up slots is exactly the groundwork you do first, and it lines up neatly with Simon's point about starting with the basics.
Two audio changes shipped in the same area. The notes record that "The sound that plays when the Signature Ability is charged has been updated, and brought down in volume", and, more usefully for readability in a fight, that "Attempting to use an ability which can't be activated will now play different sounds depending on the reason it couldn't be used. For instance, insufficient charges, the ability being on cooldown, and the wrong weapon type being used." Distinct failure sounds are a small feature with a large payoff once a player has several abilities and several possible reasons for one to refuse.
Two entries matter for the people building on top of all this. Under Items and Interactions, "Items can now hang an interaction off a fourth ability slot instead of only the three, and the crossbow's Root_Common_StatAmmoReload_Entry reload moved onto it in Template_Weapon_Crossbow." And for plugin developers, "The GroundedCondition interaction moved out of the Abilities builtin into the core server, so an interaction can use it without that plugin loaded." Both widen what a server can build with abilities. If you run one against the pre-release branch, our coverage of the 0.6.6 hotfix on 14 September has the current stable picture alongside it.
When Could an Expanded Hytale Rune System Arrive
No date has been given. Not for the expansion Simon described as heavy, and certainly not for boss abilities as runes, which have never been scheduled at all.
What can be said is where in the release structure something like this would sit. "Need to start with the basics first" is a statement about sequence, and the sequence Hytale has published runs in chapters rather than in weeks. Simon has previously talked about how many chapters early access is expected to cover, which we wrote up in his comments on a six or seven chapter roadmap. A combat system five runes deep and being polished in consecutive pre-release parts is on a chapter-scale arc, not a hotfix-scale one.
The realistic expectation is incremental: more runes, more modifier interactions, more of the categories Simon listed, arriving across updates. Boss abilities as player runes may eventually emerge from that, or may stay a thing the team tried once. Both outcomes are consistent with everything that has actually been said.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Hytale confirm boss abilities as player runes?
Simon Collins-Laflamme confirmed the team tried it internally. On 16 September 2026 he wrote "ah yes, we did try boss abilities as runes for fun and omg", followed immediately by "however, need to start with the basics first". That is a confirmed prototype, not a confirmed feature. No update, date or boss has been attached to it, and it does not appear in any published patch note.
What is the Hytale Rune Ability system?
It is the combat system introduced in the Update 7 pre-release on 3 September 2026. The patch notes describe it as: "Introducing the Rune Ability system! Collect Runes and then place them within a Runebinder's Effigy to augment your combat abilities." It shipped with an initial five runes.
What runes are in Hytale right now?
Five. Rune: Enrage increases damage dealt and received. Rune: Fireball launches a fireball that explodes on impact. Rune: Imbue Poison applies a stacking poison debuff through your weapon. Rune: Ground Slam erupts an earthen spike that launches foes upward. Rune: Wind Strike makes your next three attacks launch piercing arcs of wind.
Will the Hytale rune system get more runes?
Yes, according to Simon's 6 September 2026 post, which describes the system as "Currently available in a very basic form in the pre-release, but will be expanded quite heavily!" That is a statement of intent about the system as a whole. It is not a statement about boss abilities specifically, and no scale or timing was given.
Is the Gobliterator getting runes in Hytale?
Nothing has been said about that. A reply in the thread asked "Gobliberator with runes??" and received no answer. The word "Gobliterator" does not appear anywhere in the Update 7 pre-release patch notes, and the only two references to a boss on that page are modder-facing mentions of the Example_Boss encounter used to demonstrate weather actions.
How do you use abilities on a controller in Hytale?
The pre-release moved ability keys 1 to 3 onto a modifier system. You hold the right bumper and press a face button: RB and Y for Ability 1, the Signature Move, RB and X for Ability 2, RB and B for Ability 3, and RB and A for Ability 4.
Where can I suggest ideas for the Hytale rune system?
Simon asked for them directly in his 6 September 2026 post, naming abilities and modifiers, and listing summons, cast-on triggers, spells, PvP, totems, buffs and support ideas as prompts. Replies to that thread are where the team invited input.
The Bottom Line
A co-founder saying his team tried boss abilities as player runes and enjoyed it is genuine news about how Hytale's combat is being developed. It is not news about what is shipping. The same reply that revealed the experiment also shelved it, and the sentence doing the shelving, "however, need to start with the basics first", is the most reliable guide to the next year of rune development that anyone has offered in public.
The basics are already in your hands if you are on the pre-release: five runes, a Runebinder's Effigy, an ability workbench that has had a visual pass, tooltips that now carry ability tags, and a control scheme rebuilt to hold more abilities than it currently needs to. That is a foundation, built deliberately, with a co-founder on record saying it will be expanded quite heavily. Treat the boss runes as what they are, a glimpse of what the foundation could eventually carry, and enjoy the five you can actually use today.
