Hytale PvP Weapon Tier List & Combat Guide (February 2026 Meta)

By HytaleCharts Team Category: guides 9 min read

Hytale's combat system has evolved rapidly through four updates. We've ranked every weapon type for PvP based on the current meta, broken down advanced combat mechanics, and provided matchup strategies for each weapon class.

Hytale's combat system is one of the deepest in any block game. After four updates and numerous balance patches, the PvP meta has started to crystallize. This guide ranks every weapon type for PvP, explains the core combat mechanics, and provides matchup strategies. Disclaimer: This tier list reflects the meta as of late February 2026 (post-Update 4 Pre-Release balance changes). Hytale is in Early Access and combat balance is actively evolving. TierWandsMagic DPSUnknown (not in Exploration Mode) S Tier: One-Handed Swords Swords sit at the top of the current meta for one reason: they have no bad matchups. They don't hard-counter anything, but nothing hard-counters them either. In a game where weapon matchups matter, being universally viable is the strongest position. Moveset Breakdown Primary Attack: Quick 3-hit combo — fast enough to trade with daggers, strong enough to pressure maces Charged Attack: Lunging stab — covers distance and catches retreating opponents. Costs 3 stamina. Block: Standard frontal block with 120° cone (buffed in Update 4 from 90°) Signature Attack (20 Energy): AoE spin followed by a stab finisher — devastating in group fights and reliable in 1v1 Why S Tier Swords are the safest weapon. Their combo speed lets you trade with daggers and disengage before maces can punish. The lunging stab is the best gap-closer in the game for melee weapons. The signature attack is excellent in both 1v1 (spin catches dodge rolls) and group PvP (AoE damage). The 120° block cone (post-Update 4) makes reactive play very strong. Tips Your lunging stab is your best tool. Use it to punish bow users who hold position and mace users who whiff. Don't over-commit to combos against daggers — their speed advantage means they'll out-trade you in extended exchanges. Hit 2 times, block, reset. Save your signature for when the opponent has low stamina. The spin is very hard to dodge when exhausted. A Tier: Daggers Daggers are the highest-skill-ceiling weapon in Hytale. In the hands of an expert, they're arguably S tier — but the tight combo timing and high stamina demands push most players down in effectiveness. Moveset Breakdown Primary Attack: Very fast multi-hit combo — the fastest attack speed in the game Charged Attack: Pouncing stab — a forward leap attack. Costs 4 stamina but covers excellent distance. Block: Smaller block window than swords, requires better timing Signature Attack (27 Energy): Rapid single-target combo — highest single-target burst damage in the game Passive: Enhanced jump distance — daggers let you jump further, adding mobility Why A Tier Daggers dominate 1v1 duels at high skill levels. The combo speed generates Signature Energy faster than any other weapon, and the signature attack deals the most single-target damage. The pouncing stab makes daggers the most mobile melee weapon. Update 4 widened the combo timing window slightly, making them more accessible. The weakness: stamina hunger. Dagger combos eat stamina fast, and exhaustion is death for a dagger player — you lose your only survival tools (dodge rolls and mobility). Daggers also struggle in group PvP because they lack AoE. Tips Never let yourself hit exhaustion. Stop attacking at 30% stamina and reset. Pounce → combo → dodge out is your bread-and-butter pattern. Against maces, you dominate. Their slow attacks can't track your movement. Pounce in during their recovery frames. Against bows, close distance with pounce and stay in their face. Bows have no melee option. A Tier: Shortbows Shortbows are the only pure ranged weapon currently available in PvP. They excel at controlling space and punishing melee players who can't close distance — but fall apart if someone gets in their face. Moveset Breakdown Primary Attack: Charged arrow shot — hold to increase damage and range, release to fire Dodge: Standard dodge roll, critical for creating distance Signature Attack: Triple-arrow burst — fires 3 arrows in a spread pattern. Devastating at medium range. No block: Shortbows cannot block. Dodge or die. Why A Tier Bows define the pace of a fight. A good bow player forces melee opponents to approach through a barrage of arrows, chipping their health before the fight even starts. The triple-arrow signature is a potential one-shot at medium range against unarmored players. In group PvP, bow players provide invaluable backline pressure. The weakness: zero melee capability. Once a dagger or sword player closes distance, the bow player's only options are dodge rolls and hoping to create enough space for another shot. Stamina management is critical — every dodge roll that doesn't create a shooting window is wasted stamina. Tips Positioning is everything. Fight from elevated terrain whenever possible. Height advantage is massive for bows. Pre-charge shots before enemies round corners or approach. A fully charged arrow on approach can delete 40%+ HP. Save your signature for when enemies are mid-dodge. The triple spread catches movement. Against maces, you hard-counter them. They're too slow to close distance. Kite endlessly. B Tier: Maces Maces are the big risk, big reward weapon. They hit harder than anything else in the game and their AoE ultimate can teamwipe in group fights — but they're slow, telegraphed, and punished easily by faster weapons. Moveset Breakdown Primary Attack: Slow repeating swings — each hit deals heavy damage and stagger Charged Attack: Powerful horizontal sweep — the widest melee attack in the game. Costs 5 stamina. Block: Strongest block in the game — reduces more damage than swords Signature Attack: Jumping downward slam — wide AoE ground pound. Reduced from 5 to 4 block radius in Update 4. Why B Tier Maces punish mistakes harder than any weapon. One charged horizontal sweep on a player caught mid-attack deals devastating damage. The signature slam is the best AoE ability in the game, making maces the kings of group PvP. Their block reduces more damage than any other weapon. The problem: every mace attack is heavily telegraphed. Good players see the windup and dodge. Daggers dance circles around maces. Bows kite indefinitely. Even swords can outpace maces with combo speed. Maces need opponents to make mistakes — they can't force engagements against skilled players. Tips Don't chase. Maces lose chases to every weapon. Hold a position and let them come to you. Your block is your best ability. Tank hits, wait for the opponent to overcommit, then punish with a charged sweep. Save your signature for group fights. A well-timed slam on a 3+ player cluster wins teamfights. Against bows, close distance using terrain cover. Open-field fights against bows are unwinnable. B Tier: Spears Spears are the most versatile weapon — they work as both melee and ranged weapons. But this jack-of-all-trades identity means they don't excel in either role. Moveset Breakdown Primary Attack: Two-handed thrust — longer range than swords, slightly slower Charged Attack: Throwable — spears can be hurled at range. Stackable up to 30. Signature Attack: Still a work-in-progress — currently less impactful than other weapons' signatures Why B Tier Spears occupy a unique niche: melee reach with ranged backup. The thrust has more range than swords, letting you poke from a safer distance. Thrown spears provide ranged harassment without committing to a bow. The stack-to-30 mechanic means you carry a substantial ammo supply. The issues: the signature attack is still being developed and feels underwhelming compared to sword spins or mace slams. Thrown spears deal less damage than arrows. And the two-handed nature means no shield. Spears are good at controlling space but struggle to secure kills against players who know when to disengage. Tips Use thrown spears to soften targets before engaging in melee. 2-3 thrown spears into melee pressure is the ideal pattern. Your range advantage over swords is small but meaningful. Space at max thrust range where swords can't hit you. Against daggers, your range keeps them at bay. Don't let them inside your thrust range. Core Combat Mechanics You Must Master Stamina Management Stamina is the most important resource in PvP. It fuels sprinting, charged attacks, and dodge rolls. Key numbers: Stamina regenerates quickly while standing still (10% faster post-Update 4) Complete depletion triggers exhaustion — can't block, sprint, or dodge for ~2 seconds Dodge rolls cost a fixed stamina amount regardless of armor weight Invincibility frames during dodge rolls are now standardized across all armor weights (Update 4) Rule of thumb: Never drop below 20% stamina unless you're going for a confirmed kill. Exhaustion in front of any competent player is death. Signature Energy Your charge meter fills through combat: Standard attacks: +1 Energy per hit Charged attacks: +3 to +6 Energy depending on weapon Energy thresholds: Swords (20), Daggers (27), Maces (~20), Bows (~15) Building energy is important but don't force attacks just to fill the meter. A well-timed signature wins fights; a panic signature wastes your biggest tool. Dodge Roll Timing Dodge rolls grant invincibility frames (i-frames) during the animation. This means you can dodge through attacks if timed correctly. Learning i-frame timing is what separates good players from great ones. I-frames activate at the start of the roll animation Rolling into attacks (toward the attacker) is often better than rolling away — you end up behind them You can't dodge while exhausted — another reason stamina management is critical Matchup Chart Attacker →vs Swordsvs Daggersvs Macesvs Bowsvs Spears SwordsMirrorSlight disadvantageAdvantageEvenSlight advantage DaggersSlight advantageMirrorHard counterAdvantageEven MacesDisadvantageHard counteredMirrorHard counteredDisadvantage BowsEvenDisadvantageHard counterMirrorEven SpearsSlight disadvantageEvenAdvantageEvenMirror Armor Considerations Armor affects movement speed, dodge roll distance, and stamina costs: Light armor: Fastest movement, longest dodge rolls, lowest damage reduction. Best for daggers and bows. Medium armor: Balanced stats. Best for swords and spears. Heavy armor: Slowest movement, shortest dodge rolls, highest damage reduction. Best for maces. Match your armor to your weapon. A dagger player in heavy armor defeats the purpose of the weapon's mobility. Where to Practice PvP Looking to improve your combat skills?
