Hytale's First Boss Has a Souls-Like Hard Mode, and It Is Being Kept Out of the Pre-Release on Purpose

Hytale is about to ship its first boss fight, and the version most players will meet is not the version the team is currently arguing about. Simon confirmed on 11 September that bosses will be "extremely hard in hard mode, despite the team trying to stop me at every step of the way", and separately said the version players get "will have been defeated by our designers. No armor, no runes, no food, no options." None of it appears in the Update 7 pre-release patch notes, because the dungeon and the boss are deliberately not in the pre-release. That decision has a visible cost he has acknowledged himself, and it explains the cash bounties of $2000 and $5000 he has attached to beating Hard Mode in under 50 and under 25 attempts. It also comes with a change that will affect every Hytale player rather than only the try-hards: a global potion cooldown, plus other nerfs aimed at what currently trivialises combat.

Hytale is about to ship its first boss fight, the one Simon revealed back in July as the Gobliterator. It has a Hard Mode. That Hard Mode is being deliberately kept out of the public pre-release, and the person building it has said out loud what that costs him. If you read the Update 7 Part 2 pre-release patch notes published on 10 September, you learned none of this. We counted: the Update 7 notes contain zero occurrences of "Gobliterator", zero of "dungeon" and zero of "hard mode". The word "boss" appears exactly twice, both times inside a modder-facing Example_Boss scripting sample. The patch notes are not hiding anything. The content simply is not in the build they describe. Everything below comes from Simon's personal X account (@Simon_Hypixel) between 4 and 13 September 2026, with one post from a colleague. It is worth noting why that is the only source: the official @Hytale account has not posted since 27 August. For this story, a developer's personal timeline is the entire public record. The Question He Asked on 27 August Two and a half weeks before any of this, Simon put the decision to the public himself: "I haven't decided yet if we should put the dungeon/boss in pre-release. Will depend on how it goes in the coming weeks." "Ideally, we don't, to keep it a surprise. However, since it's the first one and comes with a lot of new features and systems, we might have to." That was 27 August. Two Update 7 pre-release waves have shipped since, on 3 and 10 September, and neither contains a dungeon or a boss. The question has been answered by omission. It was answered in words too, on 11 September, in a reply that is the load-bearing quote of this whole story: "trying to find all the glitch with no pre release is quite the challenge lol" That is a developer describing, cheerfully, the exact trade he took. The pre-release exists so that thousands of players find the bugs. He has opted his headline feature out of it to preserve a surprise, and he is now hunting those glitches without them. "The Bosses Will Be Extremely Hard in Hard Mode" The announcement came the same day, 11 September, and it is comfortably the most-liked thing in this window at nearly 14,000 likes: "A difficult update about Hytale: the bosses will be extremely hard in hard mode, despite the team trying to stop me at every step of the way. This is a difficult update, pun intended." The scope matters and he gave it plainly. Asked whether Hard Mode was for the game in general or only for bosses, he replied: "just bosses for now, will add other stuff later". This is not a game-wide difficulty setting. It is a per-boss mode, with an intention to widen later and no timeline attached to that intention. The design target is explicitly souls-like, and he has been specific about what that means in numbers rather than vibes: "Some people will rage and say it's impossible, but it's actually possible and I want to make sure its even doable with no armor, no buffs, no potions, and copper/iron weapons, just like souls games are balanced so you know if you cant kill it its just a skill issue" And, on the version that will actually ship: "The version you will play will have been defeated by our designers. No armor, no runes, no food, no options. One of them is almost done killing it no weapons!" "As frustrating as it will be, its possible. Great learning experience!" Read that as a balancing methodology rather than a boast. The claim is not that the fight is fair because it feels fair; it is that the fight has been cleared by a designer stripped of every system the game gives you, which means the failure state is always readable as a player-skill problem rather than a gear problem. Whether that survives contact with a hundred thousand players is the open question, and it is the reason a private test group exists at all. Two more lines are worth having, because they set expectations about how central this is. On 9 September: "I spent more time playing this boss fight than the normal game loop itself at this point, so you can be sure its going to be a big core feature of Hytale". And on 12 September, with no further comment required: "i love dark souls", followed by "you guys are doomed". Cash Bounties, and a Private Test Group Before the announcement, on 5 September, he attached money to it in a reply: "$2000 if you can do hard mode in less than 50 tries". The next day he raised and tightened it: "or, $5000 if you can do it under 25 attempts", followed by "choose wisely". The private group is real and confirmed first-hand. On 11 September, to someone asking in: "Ill invite you to private testing but you most stream the fight to the whole team". Community members in those threads describe the same arrangement. That is as much as is established, and we are not going to speculate about who is in it or how large it is. Here is the tension worth sitting with, because it is the genuinely interesting thing in this story rather than the difficulty bragging. Simon is bug-hunting a headline feature without the pre-release player base whose entire purpose is finding bugs, and simultaneously paying cash bounties to recruit a small, private, streaming test group to do that job instead. He has acknowledged the first half himself. The bounties are, functionally, a paid substitute for the free QA he opted out of. Whether a handful of very good players streaming to the team finds the same class of problem as thousands of ordinary ones is the bet being made here, and the surprise is what it is being made for. Goblins are in the pre-release. The Goblin boss is not. Our first look at the Chapter 1 Goblins covers the roster that did ship. The Engineering Case For Shipping It This Way The most substantial defence of the approach came from a colleague rather than from Simon. On 12 September, slikey wrote: "Honestly even if wasn't yet (and I don't make that decision) - during early access it is much more important to show what gameplay we can deliver and making a boss fight v1 an example of that is much more important." "It is the first boss fight we ship and we are proving the production pipeline and learn what capabilities are missing for even better boss fights." "I am proud we could actually have a WoW mythic level boss fight that requires strong understanding of boss mechanics and the whole encounter management while taking immersion in Hytale to another level." That is a different argument from Simon's, and a more useful one for anyone building content in Hytale. The first boss is not primarily a piece of content; it is a proof that the production pipeline can make bosses at all, and an audit of what the toolset is still missing. If you build encounters yourself, that framing tells you where the tooling is likely to improve next, and our no-code encounter manager guide covers what is available to you today. The Potion Nerf Is The Part That Affects Everyone Hard Mode is opt-in and, for now, boss-only. The balance work underneath it is not. If you only take one thing from this piece, take this one. On 9 September, explaining why Hard Mode forces changes elsewhere: "tbh we will have to make a lot of game changes to make this balance to prevent exploits" "example, cant have people just spam health pots non-stop, so we need to decide if its a cooldown or something else" Minutes later, the working answer: "I hate it, easy solution is global potion cooldown short term". Note both halves. He does not like the solution, and he is proposing it anyway as the short-term fix. By 11 September it had hardened into a commitment: "gimme me some time, its happening" "some nerfs and adjustments are coming your way tho, like potion cooldowns and other stuff that trivialize combat" "however, polishing/improving combat will make it all feel much better + runes as well" "you might be able to 1 tap aoe some easy mobs, but the big elites will mess you up" A global potion cooldown is a genuine change to how Hytale plays, and it reaches well past anyone who intends to touch Hard Mode. If you run a PvP server, a dungeon server or anything with a player-driven economy, potion spam is currently load-bearing in ways you may not have audited. Our potion and alchemy guide and the write-up of the alchemy system rework cover what is being nerfed, and the PvP weapon tier list covers the combat side that a cooldown reshapes. Nothing has shipped yet and no date has been given, so treat this as a heads-up rather than a patch note. One related line from 11 September, with no elaboration offered: "whole UI/HUD is being worked on". That is everything he said about it. What We Are Not Claiming A few things need stating plainly, because this story is going to get retold badly. The name "Gobliterator" is second-hand for September. Simon did not use it in any post between 4 and 13 September. He named the boss in July, in a post reading simply "The Gobliterator." with an attached image, which drew nearly 4,000 likes and which we covered alongside the rest of his July behind-the-scenes run. For September it is attested only by community members, including @Prowl8413 on 9 September and @ZeaBotLVL on 10 September, in threads Simon was actively replying in without correcting them. That is reasonable evidence the name still stands. It is not the same as him confirming it this month, and we are not going to write it as though it were. There is no release date here, for anything. Nothing in this window touches a Chapter 1 date, an Update 7 date, monetisation, Early Access scope or server hosting. If you see those claims attached to this story, they were added by somebody else. Our piece on how many chapters Early Access covers has the actual state of the roadmap. Hard Mode is bosses only for now. "just bosses for now, will add other stuff later" is the whole statement. It is not a difficulty slider for the game, and anyone reporting it as one is reading in something that was not said. If you want a harder Hytale today, that is what Hardcore Mode already does, and it is a completely separate system. We are not characterising the images. The 11 September posts carry attached media we could not read, so we are not going to tell you what is in them. For background, the direction was set in August. On 19 August Simon said "a hard-mode version of this boss will be available, and we'll make sure the try-hards get their souls-like experience", and separately, "You know what, I want more boss fights. Going to expand the team after Chapter 1 to do so." September is that plan arriving, not a change of course. Frequently Asked Questions Is the Hytale boss fight in the pre-release? No. The Update 7 pre-release patch notes for 3 and 10 September 2026 contain no mention of a dungeon, a boss or a hard mode. On 27 August Simon said he had not decided whether to include it and would ideally keep it a surprise, and on 11 September he described "trying to find all the glitch with no pre release" as a challenge, which confirms it is not in there. What is Hytale's Hard Mode? A harder version of boss encounters, announced by Simon on 11 September 2026: "the bosses will be extremely hard in hard mode, despite the team trying to stop me at every step of the way." He has said it is "just bosses for now, will add other stuff later", so it is not a game-wide difficulty setting. Is Hytale's Hard Mode actually beatable? That is the stated design target. Simon says he wants it "doable with no armor, no buffs, no potions, and copper/iron weapons, just like souls games are balanced", and that the shipping version "will have been defeated by our designers. No armor, no runes, no food, no options. One of them is almost done killing it no weapons!" What are the $2000 and $5000 Hytale bounties? Cash offers Simon made on X before the announcement: "$2000 if you can do hard mode in less than 50 tries" on 5 September, then "or, $5000 if you can do it under 25 attempts" the next day, with "choose wisely". No formal rules, entry process or deadline have been published. Is Hytale getting a potion cooldown? It is planned but not shipped. Simon said a global potion cooldown is the "easy solution" short term, that he hates it, and on 11 September that "some nerfs and adjustments are coming your way tho, like potion cooldowns and other stuff that trivialize combat". No date, and nothing about it appears in any patch notes yet. When does the Hytale boss fight release? No date has been given for the boss, the dungeon, Chapter 1 or Update 7. Nothing in this September window touches release dates at all. Where This Leaves You If you play, nothing is available to try yet and there is no point hunting for the dungeon in the pre-release. What you can do is get used to combat without leaning on potions, because a cooldown of some shape is coming and the muscle memory is transferable. Our guide to how Hytale combat actually feels is the starting point, and the runes system explainer covers the other half of the kit that Simon expects to carry the polish work. If you run a server, the potion cooldown is the line item to watch. Audit anything in your economy, your PvP rules or your dungeon content that assumes a player can drink continuously, and find out now rather than on patch day. When you want to see how other servers are handling combat balance, browse the Hytale server list and go look at what they are running.
