Hytale Chapter 1 Added Over 100 Cosmetics and Removed the Color Cast From Five Garments in the Same Update, Which Is Why Your Avatar Looks Different
By HytaleCharts TeamCategory: news8 min read
Hytale shipped a large additive cosmetics update in Chapter 1, over 100 new options, and in the same section of the same patch notes it removed the colour cast from five existing garments and rebuilt the models and textures of several more. Players who had spent months assembling a look logged in to find that look altered. The complaints are now one of the biggest clusters in r/Hytale's top-of-week ranking, with thread titles like "Update killed my avatar's aura" and "THEY TOOK MY EYES, GIVE THEM BACK". The awkward part for anyone wanting to call this a stealth change is that it is not one. The bullet is there, in the official post, under a heading most players never opened. We go through the exact wording, explain plainly what a colour cast is and why removing one makes a garment look more neutral than players remembered, match the Reddit titles to the specific bullets where that mapping is sound, flag where we are inferring, and note the separate 0.7.1 fix for avatar presets that anyone still on 0.7.0 should install before judging what their presets look like.
Chapter 1 added more than 100 new cosmetic options to Hytale. In the same update, in the same section of the same patch notes, Hytale removed the colour cast from five named garments and rebuilt the models and textures of several others. Players logged in on 12 October, looked at characters they had been wearing for months, and found them changed.
The change is documented. It is one bullet, under a heading most players never opened. That is the story here: not a stealth change, but an accurate patch note that failed to reach the people it was about.
What the Hytale Chapter 1 Patch Notes Say About Cosmetics
The "Avatar & Customization" section of Hytale's "CHAPTER I: OUT OF THE BREACH" post, dated 12 October 2026, runs to seven bullets. Here is the section in full and in Hytale's order, with its own American spelling of "color" left intact:
Added over 100 new cosmetic options, many of which are Goblin-themed.
Updated the models and textures for numerous cosmetics, including the Colored Khaki Pants, Stylish Shorts, Maxi Skirt, Desert Skirt, and ear variations.
The Alpine Explorer’s Jumper, Double Button Jacket, Farmer’s Vest, Paint Splatter Shirt, and Smart Shirt will no longer have a color cast upon them.
The emblem on the Alpine Explorer’s Jumper is now blue instead of red.
Eye patches and medical eye patches can now be worn over either eye.
Blindfolds will now cover eyebrows.
Mouth covers will now cover beards.
One bullet adds. Six change something that already existed on characters people had already built. Note also the word "including" in the second bullet: the five items listed there are examples, not a complete list, so Hytale is telling you that an unspecified number of other cosmetics were rebuilt as well.
What a Color Cast Is, and Why Your Hytale Avatar Looks Different
A colour cast is a tint laid over a garment's texture. The underlying texture, with its pattern and its base colours, sits beneath, and the cast shifts the whole thing toward one hue. Removing the cast does not alter the model or the pattern. It strips the tint off the top and returns the garment to the colours underneath.
The practical result is that an item looks more neutral, and usually more desaturated, than the one a player remembers. That single mechanism explains a complaint which otherwise sounds unreasonable. Nothing left anyone's wardrobe. The items are still owned, still equipped, still named the same. They look different.
Hytale writes "color cast" in its own notes, so that spelling appears here whenever we quote them.
Hytale does not say why. The bullet states that the five garments "will no longer have a color cast upon them" and stops there. There is no claim that the casts were a bug, no claim that they were intentional and have now been retired, and no account of what the team was trying to achieve. Anyone presenting this as a fix, or as a regression, is filling in a blank that Hytale left empty. We are not going to guess at a motive.
The Hytale Alpine Explorer’s Jumper Lost Its Tint and Its Red Emblem
Five garments are named as losing their cast:
Alpine Explorer’s Jumper
Double Button Jacket
Farmer’s Vest
Paint Splatter Shirt
Smart Shirt
The Alpine Explorer’s Jumper takes two hits in one update, because the next bullet moves its emblem from red to blue. For anyone who built an outfit around that jumper, the tint changed and the accent colour changed, in a single login. That is the item most likely to look unrecognisable to its owner.
The other visual changes are structural rather than tonal. Eye patches and medical eye patches can now be worn over either eye, blindfolds now cover eyebrows, and mouth covers now cover beards. Each alters what is visible on a face someone had already settled on. If you had a beard showing through a mouth cover, that was the look. It is not the look now.
Hytale Cosmetics Changed: What r/Hytale Is Posting
Four of the 25 entries in r/Hytale's top-of-week ranking are this complaint. The titles, exactly as posted:
"Update killed my avatar's aura", 13 October 2026
"Where did her pink go?! Why?!?", 13 October 2026
"THEY TOOK MY EYES, GIVE THEM BACK", 13 October 2026
"false advertisement!", 15 October 2026
Two caveats on how to read that, and we want them taken seriously. We are not quoting upvote or comment figures, because we could not retrieve them. And we have not read the bodies of these threads, so we cannot tell you what any of them argues, what evidence it presents, or whether its author is even complaining about the same bullet as their neighbour. Titles tell you sentiment and they tell you scale. They do not tell you detail.
What four out of 25 does establish is that this is not two people being loud. A ranking of a week's best-performing posts in Hytale's main subreddit, during the week its biggest update shipped, gave roughly a sixth of its places to altered avatars.
Matching the Complaints to the Hytale Patch Notes
The mapping below is ours, not Reddit's. No thread title states its own cause, so we are pairing titles with the bullets they are most consistent with, and saying so.
"Where did her pink go?! Why?!?" is consistent with the colour cast removal. A pink that disappears while the garment stays equipped is exactly what stripping a tint off a texture produces.
"Update killed my avatar's aura" fits the same bullet. "Aura" is not a game system here, it is a description of an overall look, and an overall look is what a cast controls.
"THEY TOOK MY EYES, GIVE THEM BACK" fits the eye patch and blindfold changes. Patches that can now sit over either eye, and blindfolds that now cover eyebrows, both change what is visible around the eyes.
"false advertisement!" we are not going to map. The title gives no indication of which change it is about, and guessing would be inventing.
Three of the four are inference from title to patch note. That inference is sound, and it is still inference.
Over 100 Hytale Cosmetics Were Added in the Same Update
The fair version of this story is not that Hytale took things away. The first bullet of the section adds over 100 cosmetic options, many of them Goblin-themed, which is the largest single expansion the customiser has had. Players have more to work with now than they did on 11 October.
What also happened is that a big additive update altered a handful of existing looks that players had built an identity around, and a one-line patch note did not convey that it would. A customised avatar is not an inventory item. It is how a person is recognised by friends on a server, in screenshots and in a Discord profile picture. That is why a five-item list produced a reaction out of proportion to its size, and why "we added 100 more" is not an answer to it. If you are rebuilding a look, our complete guide to Hytale emotes and avatar customisation covers what the customiser can and cannot do, and our coverage of the emote wheel and hairstyle changes in Update 4 is the closest precedent for a customisation change landing without warning.
One Related Hytale Fix: Avatar Presets in Hotfix 0.7.1
There is something actionable here, and it is in the 0.7.1 notes rather than the Chapter 1 ones. Hytale's "HOTFIXES: UPDATE 7" page lists this under 0.7.1:
Switching avatar presets no longer drops you into offline mode until you restart the game.
Avatar presets were themselves broken at launch. If you are still on 0.7.0 and have been fighting with presets while trying to work out what your character is supposed to look like, update first. Note the limit of what that bullet claims: it is about being dropped into offline mode, not about cosmetics rendering differently, so installing it will not bring a colour cast back. The rest of that hotfix is in our 0.7.1 coverage, and a second hotfix landed the following day, covered in our 0.7.2 write-up.
No Official Hytale Response, and No Sign of a Reversal
We found nothing from Hytale addressing the reaction. Not a post, not a note, not a line in either hotfix.
Hotfixes 0.7.1 on 13 October and 0.7.2 on 14 October restore no colour cast and do not mention cosmetics at all, and hytale.com has not been rebuilt since 14 October at 19:34 UTC, which we checked across the site's last-modified headers. So there is no published sign of a reversal, a toggle or an acknowledgement. We are reporting what we could not find rather than asserting that nothing exists.
What We Have Not Verified
We have not compared the garments before and after ourselves. The list of five is Hytale's, not a visual audit of our own, and we cannot tell you how large the difference is on any individual item.
We do not know which other cosmetics were rebuilt. "Numerous cosmetics, including" is as specific as the notes get.
We do not know why the casts were removed. No reason is published.
We have not read the Reddit threads. Titles and dates only, with no engagement figures and no claim about what any post argues.
For the rest of what shipped on 12 October, including the parts that affect servers rather than wardrobes, see our breakdown of the Chapter 1 patch notes and the minigames that did not make launch.
