Hytale Engineer Confirms Party Tech and Group Dungeons Are Planned, Names World of Warcraft as the Team's Design Reference, and Gives No Timeline

Ask a Hytale developer a good question in a reply and you sometimes get a better answer than any blog post would carry. On 15 October a fan asked about queueing with random players for the goblin dungeon. Hytale engineer slikey answered with the clearest statement yet on co-op dungeon design: the party idea has already been discussed internally, the team would love to build dungeons for parties that require group mechanics, and the technology for that is "definitely coming at some point". slikey named the obstacle too, and it is a design obstacle rather than a technical one, because fights that feel right solo and also in a group are hard to build. slikey separately described the current state of playing dungeons with friends, which is that they join your world and you have gear ready for them. There is no timeline, no version number, no confirmed matchmaking queue and no official announcement anywhere on Hytale's own channels. The reply reached almost nobody: 41 likes and 640 views at the time of writing, against more than 22,000 views on a Simon reply the same day about something unrelated.

The most substantive piece of Hytale news on 15 October was not posted by Hytale. It arrived as the third reply in a fan thread about dungeon queueing, written by a Hytale engineer who posts as slikey, and it is the first time anyone on the team has confirmed that party technology and group dungeons are planned at all. One paragraph confirms the idea has been discussed internally, names the team's design reference point, and says plainly what is holding the feature up. It also reached almost nobody: 41 likes and 640 views at the time of writing, while a reply from @Simon_Hypixel the same day on an unrelated subject had passed 22,000 views. That gap is the second story here. What Hytale's slikey Said About a Party System and Group Dungeons The thread opens with a feature request. On 15 October, @Gomeruchi asked: Hey @Simon_Hypixel! What if you could queue to match with random players to take on the goblin dungeon? 👀 Maybe a future feature? @Prowl8413 replied about ten hours later, pointing at earlier community discussion of the same idea: @Gomeruchi @Simon_Hypixel We talked about this in one of the podcasts, I think with @BigDudeHytale, @BrokenColdBox and @oatman5000. Would be cool if you could queue up the dungeon with friends or even strangers. I'm sure this would definitely require a lot of work on their part, but would be really cool Then slikey answered, and this is the paragraph worth reading twice: I mean friends is possible, just that you'll have to have them join you and you having gear ready for them. Generally the party idea is something we discussed internally already. Given most of us have a strong WoW background, we'd love to make dungeons for parties that require group mechanics. The tech for that is definitely coming at some point but really hard to design fights that are good for solo and coop. Can You Play Hytale Dungeons With Friends Right Now? Yes, and the first sentence of the reply is a description of the present rather than a feature announcement: "friends is possible, just that you'll have to have them join you and you having gear ready for them." Two conditions sit inside that. Your friends have to join you, which means joining your world, so there is no lobby, no queue and no grouping across separate worlds. And you have to have gear ready for them, because a guest arrives with whatever their own progression on your world has given them, which may be nothing. That is the host doing logistics, not a party system doing the work. The dungeon @Gomeruchi was asking about is covered in our Chapter 1 launch day, Deepworks and hard mode piece. So the honest answer to "can you play Hytale dungeons with friends" is that you can run them together today by hosting them, which is not what either fan in the thread was asking for. Hytale Group Dungeons and the "Strong WoW Background" The second claim is the confirmation. "Generally the party idea is something we discussed internally already", followed by "we'd love to make dungeons for parties that require group mechanics", followed by "the tech for that is definitely coming at some point". Taken together that is an internal discussion, a stated preference, and a technology commitment with no date attached. It is not a feature announcement. What makes it notable is the middle clause: "given most of us have a strong WoW background" is the first time the team's design reference has been named this plainly in public. Read it for what it is. In World of Warcraft terms a dungeon that "requires group mechanics" means fights built around roles, positioning and duties one player cannot cover alone. It does not follow that Hytale is building WoW-style content, and slikey said nothing about tanks or healers. Treat it as a statement about the team's instincts, not about content. The Blocker Is Design, Not Engineering The last clause is the most useful sentence in the thread for anyone trying to guess at timing: "The tech for that is definitely coming at some point but really hard to design fights that are good for solo and coop." Note the order. The technology is the confident half and the design is the hard half. A fight that requires several players to split duties is, by construction, a fight one player cannot complete, and Hytale is a game people also play alone. Every encounter has to work twice, and no amount of engineering effort solves that on its own. slikey's own account of unfinished systems in the boats cut from Chapter 1 showed a team willing to hold a feature back rather than ship it half-built, and dungeons and bosses are one of the three post-Chapter-1 pipelines in Simon's account of the roadmap and the team scaling toward 100 people. Group content has a home in that structure. It does not have a date. Hytale Matchmaking Was Not Confirmed This distinction matters, so we are going to spell it out. What was asked: whether you could "queue to match with random players", and in the follow-up, "queue up the dungeon with friends or even strangers". That is matchmaking. What was answered: parties, group mechanics and the technology behind them. slikey did not use the words queue, matchmaking or strangers, and did not say that random players would ever be matched together. A party is a group of people who already know each other. Matchmaking is infrastructure that forms groups out of strangers, with the queue management, region routing and behaviour moderation that implies. Confirming the first says nothing about the second, and matchmaking remains a fan request with no developer response. No Timeline, and No Official Announcement "At some point" is the entire timing statement. There is no version number, no chapter, no update, no window and no ordering against anything else on the roadmap. We are not going to map it onto a release, and readers should be sceptical of anyone who does. Hytale's own versioning makes that mapping impossible from outside, as slikey explained when correcting the assumption that the next update would be Chapter 2: updates and chapters are not the same track. This is also not an announcement. There is no blog post about party play, nothing in the Chapter 1 patch notes or the hotfixes, and nothing on the @Hytale account. One engineer answered a question in a reply chain, and that is the whole of the public record. Hytale's Real News Keeps Landing in Replies We have documented this pattern enough times to call it one. Hytale's most informative statements of the past week have come from developers answering individuals, not from the channels built for announcements, and the boats story had the same shape: a substantial explanation of an unfinished system, buried in a reply, invisible to anyone not reading that thread. The reach makes the cost concrete: 41 likes and 640 views at the time of writing, for the first confirmation that group dungeon technology is planned. Engagement counts drift and we would normally not quote them, but low reach is the point. It reached a rounding error of the audience that saw a routine reply from the founder the same afternoon. The Party Idea Came Up Twice in One Day Later on 15 October, with no connection to the dungeon thread, @_Hawkon posted a different party request: Idea: When you're in a party, the other avatars appear in the world behind you and they can trigger emotes. After @osu_gamer_ tagged him into it, Simon replied: @osu_gamer_ @_Hawkon guys I know all this but we also got to make a whole game 😅 Read it as written. It is good-humoured, and it is a founder saying the wishlist is understood and competing with everything else on a very long list. It is not a rejection of party features. "I know all this" is acknowledgement. The signal worth keeping is the coincidence. Two unconnected people raised party play in the same day, from different angles, one about dungeon difficulty and one about social presence, and both got a developer response. That is what demand looks like before a feature exists. Separately: Asked to Remove the Hytale Map, Simon Said Fog of War One more exchange from the same day, on a different subject, because it is a design signal worth logging. @SeyagerYT argued for removing the in-game map entirely: Hytale should not have an in game map. It breaks exploration and random generation surprise more than we think. Simon's reply was five words: @SeyagerYT need to add fog of war Five words is five words, so do not over-read it. What it implies is that the map stays and gains progressive reveal rather than being removed, which is a different answer from the one requested. No implementation, timing or commitment was attached, and Hytale has published nothing about fog of war elsewhere. What Hytale Has Not Said No timeline. "At some point" is all there is. No version, no chapter, no window. No matchmaking. The question was about queueing with strangers. The answer was about parties. These are not the same thing and the second was never confirmed. No feature scope. Party size, how parties would form, whether they cross worlds, whether existing dungeons would be retuned: none of it has been described, and the person confirming the technology called the design "really hard". If group dungeons do arrive, expect the system to be described properly first, the way Hytale handled the systems work in our piece on the crafting rework and companions. Until then the accurate summary is short: the team wants group dungeons, has discussed them, is confident about the technology, and has not worked out how to make the fights good for one player and several at once.
